About Fredon

Nestled in the scenic rolling hills of Northwestern New Jersey, Fredon Township offers residents and visitors a peaceful blend of rural tranquility, historic charm, and active community spirit. Incorporated in 1904, Fredon is proud to be the youngest township in Sussex County—deliberately woven together from portions of Andover, Green, Hampton, and Stillwater Townships to create a place completely its own.

Our Community at a Glance

With elevations ranging from 480 to 960 feet, Fredon’s topography provides stunning vistas, active greenways, and vast, protected open spaces.

  • A Close-Knit Population:
Home to approximately 3,450 residents, Fredon maintains a deeply supportive, small-town atmosphere where neighbors truly know one another.

  • The Heart of the Township:
While we may not have a traditional commercial “main street,” our community life thrives along the Route 94 corridor—centered around Fredon Elementary School, the Municipal Building, the Civic Center, and our dedicated Volunteer Fire Company.

A Rich & Living History

We invite you to explore the legacy of Fredon—a place where agricultural roots, community pride, and historic preservation meet.

  • Coursen’s Corners

Journey back to the 1800s and discover Coursen’s Corners, the bustling historic village at the intersection of Phil Hardin Road and Stillwater Road. Long before Route 94 was paved, this dusty crossroads served as the beating heart of the community. In the 19th century, the corner boasted a blacksmith shop, a tannery, a tailor shop, local general stores, a post office, a chapel, and the schoolhouse.

  • The Coursen Legacy & Homestead

The history of Fredon is deeply tied to the Coursen family, who first settled here in the mid-18th century. The Colonel John Coursen Homestead, built circa 1805 and currently being lovingly refurbished by the Keepers of Coursen’s Corners, stands today as a proud testament to Fredon’s development. Located immediately adjacent to Lodestar Park, it bridges our past with our active present.

  • The Fredon Fountain House

A beloved landmark that once served as a classic stagecoach stop and welcoming oasis for weary travelers, the historic Fredon Fountain House remains an iconic, operational part of our local landscape today.

Agriculture & Open Space

Farming isn’t just part of Fredon’s history—it is our current landscape and our future. Today, 41 percent of the land in Fredon is utilized as active farmland, ranging from sprawling agricultural properties over 40 acres to boutique “mini-farms” between 12 and 40 acres.

In line with the New Jersey State Development and Redevelopment Plan, Fredon actively coordinates policies to support local growers and preserve farmlands. Waterwheel Farm stands out as another premier, recognized agricultural property locally, contributing to the hundreds of acres permanently protected under the New Jersey Farmland Preservation Program to safeguard the area’s pristine open space.
